On Friday on the 7th of October, Crosshaven Colaiste Muire held a jersey day in aid of children in Wajir in Northern Kenya. The school asked students and teachers to bring in €2 or more, in return allowing them to wear a jersey of their choice for the day.
A total €1140 was raised on the day. The money will be sent directly to Wajir. The money will be used to help children with conditions such as club feet which is a deformity of the feet.
Some Second and Transition Year students have linked up with the children through Skype. The money raised will be used to pay for necessary surgery for four children. Anita Ennis who is the co-ordinator of the project spoke of the nineteen-hour journey which the sick children must take to Nairobi for their treatment. This surgery will greatly improve the children’s quality of life.
The Kenyan children have given the title of “Well Wishers” to Coláiste Muire students in return for their support. 1140

Sailing began this year with keen 1st years wanting to learn the art of sailing. We all begun on last friday giving the boats a good scrub down.Training is on every day after school. We sail until 6′o clock. Each student who does not know how to sail is taught the basics of sailing. Mr Hanley Mr Henessey and Mr Barry are a great help to us to organise sailing and coach us. Later on in the year we hope to get a team together to sail in competitions. Every student is welcome to join even if you can or can’t sail. This week Michael and Patrick took part in the national 18′s competition and won the race. Congratulations!

Crosshaven under 16′s and under 19′s both played Douglas on the 28/9/2011
Under 16 match:
During the first period crosshaven were behind but they began to catch up during the second and third period but failed to keep up in the fourth period. The final score was 49-38 to douglas.
under 19 match:
The under 19′s played a good match but in the end lost out by a score of 43-27 . David Reardon got an amazing 15 points.
In both games Crosshaven put up a very good performance and were unlucky to lose out to two very good Douglas teams

On Tuesday, Jim Wilson, came to Colaiste Muire to teach us about our surrounding environment and the wildlife in Cork Harbour. He presented photographs of different types of birds, sea creatures and rocks. Mr Wilson took the YSI students up to the woods to help with their YSI project and shared information about trees and birds. He taught us that weed killer residue was found in penguin’s eggs when he went to Antarctica!

All Ireland Basketball champions: Colaiste Muire capture the Bank of Ireland Under 16 school’s cup:
Charles McGoldrick got his team off to a great start, as St Muredachs got on the score-sheet first. Colaiste Muire hit back with two scores in quick succession. The sides appeared well matched as Peter Jermyn hit back for Crosshaven to make it 4-4. Cillian Lane and Colin Curran added a basket each for Crosshaven before Rory McGrath hit back for St Muredach’s. Crosshaven seemed to have the upper hand defensively and took an 11-6 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter was a low scoring affair, with both teams contesting fiercely for territory and possession. Still Crosshaven were looking the more likely of the two sides. Jordan Murphy, Colin Curran and Cillian Lane were key in stretching the Cork side’s lead out to ten midway through the second quarter. Lane was performing well at both ends of the courts, getting in some timely blocks to frustrate Ballina. Colin Curran added three fine-lay ups in a row as Crosshaven’s class began to show. Jermyn added a spectacular three at the buzzer for Colaiste Muire completing what was a miserable second quarter for St Muredach’s, who managed just one point in the entire period to leave them trailing (33-7) at half time.
The St Muredach’s support was being drowned out by the considerable Crosshaven following in the stand. It was a pattern reflected on the court too, as the magnitude of the occasion appeared to overwhelm the Mayo side.
Ballina returned for the second half with a renewed sense of purpose. Unfortunately for the Mayo side, the damage of the second quarter was irreparable. Frustration was beginning to set in as Joseph Timlin was fouled out of the game and Thomas Murphy was guilty of a technical violation. The game lost, St Muredach’s coach Barry Murphy allowed some of his bench to see some action. Rory Tighe was by far the smallest player on-court, yet it did not prevent him from scoring for Ballina within minutes of coming on. In fact, the substitutes seemed to breathe some life into a beleaguered side.
The fourth quarter was more akin to a practise match in truth, as the difference on the score board, allowed Crosshaven to take their foot off the gas. A resounding 51-34 win was a fitting reward for a well drilled and confident performance.
Thanks to basketball Ireland for this report

The Transition Year students travelled to Graball Bay yesterday to clean up all the rubbish that was left on the beach. They picked up rubbish like cans, string, rope, plastic bottles and even a shoe. The students were joined by Aidan Gray, a spokesperson from Clean Coast Ireland http://www.cleancoastsireland.org/. Clean Coast Ireland is about the protection and enhancement of Ireland’s coastline. The students collected seven full bin bags of rubbish!
