As part of the Young Social Innovator competition fifteen students have undertaken the task of building a biodiversity area in the Crúachán woods. We are working in conjunction with Crosshaven Development Committee.

We will be placing bird boxs and bat boxes in the woods to attract wildlife. We have received talks from birdwatch expert Jim Wilson who also walked the woods with us.

Great start for Senior Girls’ soccer season!

Coláiste Muire 2, St. Mary’s Newport 1

It was a shaky start for the girls as they went into half time losing 1-0-(against St.Marys from Newport,Tipperary) even with the great attempts by captain of the day, Megan O’ Keeffe, hitting the crossbar twice.

The cold weather didn’t dampen the girls hopes going into the second half. With a wonderful goal from captain Megan O’ Keeffe taken from well outside the box, the girls were level at last.

Hearts were on edge as a few goals were nearly conceded against our favour, but a tremendous job was done by  goal keeper, Second year student, Aoibhinn Kidney.  She had great help from the team’s defenders.

Time was nearly up when the winning goal was scored by yet again, Megan O’ Keeffe.

The girls had made it into the semi-finals of the Munster Cup.

A brilliant day for all!

Well done girls!!!

Colaiste Muire Students win Young Scientist

Congradulations to Thomas Cronin, Dylan Coss and Jeremy Barisch-Rooney, Transition-Year students of Coláiste Muire who won the best group award at the BT Young Scientist for 2011
Young Scientest Winners
This piece from the Irish Times:

“The best group project award went to Thomas Cronin, Dylan Coss and Jeremy Barisch-Rooney of Coláiste Muire, Crosshaven, Co Cork. They are bringing wind-turbine electricity generation to the people, developing methods to produce working turbines from discarded junk. They used a scrapped bicycle as the foundation of their system and then designed an alternator that can produce up to 200 volts of power. All of the electrical wiring and magnets needed to make the system were recovered from abandoned cars and other sources.

They produced easy-to-copy designs for turbine blades, made either of cut plastic pipes or from timber. All of the materials needed to build the portable wind turbine were readily available as scrap in the developing world, the students said. The most important scrap was wire and magnets, and an old bike frame and gears would complete the generator. It was also possible to use running water instead of wind to spin the turbine and generate electricity.

The three Transition Year students have already established links with a charity, Friends of Londiani, which tries to help developing communities to help themselves. The charity will help bring the students’ designs to these communities and show them how to produce their own low-cost electricity. For winning the best group project, the trio will receive a BT perpetual trophy and a cheque for €2,400.”

Basketball: Good start to League by Senior girls

Last Thursday, the Boys’ under19 and under 16 teams had basketball games in Pres. The under 16 team played very well and the game was close throughout. The boys were down by 4 points with about 30 seconds to go when Alex Browne drained a three pointer. Unfortunately the boys lost by one point. High scorers for the team included Stephen Curran, Michael O’ Connell and Xavi Pin. The under 19 boys also put up a great effort, having only seven players for the match. Unfortunately, Pres pulled away in the forth quarter to win the game. The high scorer for Crosshaven was David Reardon.

The Senior and Cadet girls opened their season away to Glanmire Community School. Both teams played very well. The seniors won 60-24 and the Cadettes won 49-39.

The Seniors had their second game on Friday 14th October. They beat St. Angelas 42-16. Two wins out of two

Transition Year Retreat

On Thursday 6th October the Transition Years went to Scala on a religious retreat. We started off by playing games that acted as icebreakers such as fruit salad. Then some of the Scala team told us stories from their past before we said a prayer. After this we were divided into groups and discussed stereotypes and peer pressure. We learned about positive and negative peer pressure. We also had a short meditation. After lunch we watched a short clip from the movie Evan Almighty which taught us that God does not give us virtues, such as patience, but oppurtunities to be patient. We then said a short prayer before returning to the school.

Transition Year Cork Harbour Tour

On Monday 26th September 2011, the Transition Years went on a boat tour of Cork Harbour. The first stop was at Spike Island. They learned that Spike Island was once used as an army barracks but from the 1980s right up until 2004 it was used as a prison.

After that they went to the Cobh Heritage Centre. There they learned about what Cork Harbour was used for in the past. They also found out about famous ships that left Cork Harbour, like the Lucitania and the Titanic. Everyone agreed that it was a worthwhile experience.
