September 19th 2012

Grace McKenzie competed in the Munster’s Intermediate Pentathlon today and did Coláiste Muire proud with her efforts.

Since First Year Grace has competed in the Schools Athletics’ competitions. When she was thirteen, she competed in the Junior Pentathlon and came second in the Munsters’ and 5th in the All-Irelands’. In the same year she competed in the All-Ireland’s individual event and won silver in the high jump.

The following year Grace competed in the same event winning 1st at the Munsters’ and 1st in the All-Ireland’s, qualifying for the International Schools Pentathlon which took place in Scotland, this Irish team went on to win team silver, narrowly being beaten by the English team.

In 2011 Grace competed in the individual competition again and gained both bronze in the shot putt and high jump. Last year once again Grace won silver in both Munster and All-Ireland pentathlon events. She qualified for International and won team silver for the second time in a row. She is currently on the Irish Combined Events squad.

The Pentathlon consists of 80m Hurdles, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Putt and the 800m.

Grace started the day well, competing in the 80m hurdles. She won this event easily having the race won throughout. Next up was the high jump. She started at 1.44m and finished with a winning jump of 1.59m beating all other competitors. This was followed by the long jump where Grace jumped 4.83m. She was disappointed with this as she had jumped 5.01m which was called as a break by less than a centimetre but she still went on to win the event. Shot putt was next where Grace had three chances to win four out of five events. She succeeded in doing so with a throw of 9.04m. Last but not least was the dreaded 800m. Grace started off slowly being in the latter pack of runners, but this was quickly changed when Grace sped up and secured third place.

Grace finished the day by coming first in four of the five events. She won Gold with 2946pts. This means Grace will now represent the school in the All-Irelands’ in Mortan Stadium, Santry, Dublin on the September 29th .
