Prisoners on Spike Island

Transition Year students got to know their local history this week. Students too a two-hour tour of the local Fort Camden given by Rescues Camden volunteers, led by Eileen Murphy and Noel Condon.       On Thursday, 4A and 4C recently went on a Harbour tour to Spike Island and Cobh. They got a boat from Hugh Coveney Pier in Crosshaven to Spike Island. Here they had a guided tour around the island where they learned about the different bastions, the cells and what life was like on the island when it was used as a prison centre. There were many different rooms on the tour that showed the life of the prisoners who were kept there.

After Spike Island, they got the ferry to Cobh Pier. Here we had our lunch break at the bandstand with the lovely scenery surrounding us. After having lunch, we went to Cork Heritage Centre. They were given a ticket and a worksheet that we had to fill out throughout the exhibition. The exhibition had information from the famine, WW1, the Titanic, The Lusitania and other interesting showcases. After the tour, we headed back to Crosshaven via the ferry.
