Coláiste Muire local history exhibition and Food Fair – Friday, May 19th 2017

The Transition Year students of Coláiste Muire  invited the wider community to a local history exhibition in the school library on Friday 19th May between 1.40 p.m and 3.00 p.m.
Visitors viewed images and other sources which outline Crosshaven’s rich heritage. Exhibits include the Cork-Passage railway, maritime history, local churches and much more.
Visitors got the opportunity to purchase home-made lemonade, summer relishes and marinades in food stalls. These products were produced in conjunction with the “Future is food” programme.
The students raised 350 euro which will go to the “Save our Steeple” campaign. This campaign aims to renovate the old Templebreedy Church.

Transition Year students complete Soccer coaching course

Congratulations to the twenty three TY students who have qualified as soccer coaches. The students completed their “Kickstart 1” certification following an intensive programme.

Coláiste Muire students travels to India with the Hope Foundation

Transition Year student, Danú Ní Thuama travelled to India with The Hope Foundation for six days over the Easter Holidays. Danú raised €2,500 for the Hope Foundation throughout the year, including and she got the opportunity to go and visit the projects relating to her fundraising.

Each day she visited different projects ran by or supported by the Hope Foundation. She visited crêches, protection homes, rehab homes,schools,a hospital and a disability home. She met amazing people from all different backgrounds throughout the week. Danú would highly recommend anybody who can, to go and help with the Hope Foundation at some point in their life because it was by far the best experience that she has had..

Killarney cycling and hiking trips

 

Transition Year students visited Killarney national park for the second time this month. Students were split into two groups. One group hiked around Torc mountain. They were guided by Richard Morrison from Morrison tours. The other group cycled around Muckross Lake. Students were guided by Jay Scully. Jay introduced the students to the geography, flora and fauna associated with the park.

TY students win media award

Congratulations to Maeve O Herlihy, Lia Murphy and Lia Berkery Kelly who came second place from 700 entries in a competition in conjunction with drugs.ie
The wrote an article entitled “what do some young people use drugs”.
They carried out a survey in the school to collect data and student opinion on the subject matter

Ag Féachaint Siar ar Seachtain na Gaeilge 2017

Rinne daltaí ón idirbhliain an físeán seo chun féachaint siar ar an craic agus spraoi a bhí againn go léir sa scoil i rith Seachtain na Gaeilge. Comhghairdeas do na daltaí a ghlac páirt sa físeán agus do na daltaí a d’oibrigh air.

Wheelchair Basketball

Transition Year students form Coláiste Muire competed in a Wheelchair basketball tournament on April 6th. University College Cork, Sport Studies and Physical Education students organised the blitz for secondary school students in aid of Irish Wheelchair Association Sport & UCC Student Hardship Fund.

The Coláiste Muire team reached the semi final and were narrowly beaten.

Animal Awareness Day

Coláiste Muire hosted an animal awareness day on the 16th of March. Students met puppies from the “Munster Lost and Found” charity and donated €2 to help reunite lost pets with their families and to help re-home stray animals.

Forty students from all Years entered a photography competition. This competition was judged by a representative from the charity.  FREE Munster Lost and Found 2017 Calendars were given to the entrants and valuable prizes were awarded.

The sum of 355 euro was raised for the charity and students enjoyed the experience. Thanks to everyone who supported the project.

Transition Year Applications for 2017/2018

There will be an information evening for parents of 3rd Year students who are considering the Transition Year programme in Coláiste Muire.

Tour of Rome and Florence: February 2017

Senior students of Coláiste Muire travelled to Rome and Florence on February 16th 2017. The tour had a historical and art-history theme involving tours of the Colosseum, Vatican and the  Uffizi  and Borghese Gallaries.
