Minor Hockey girls win
The minor girls hockey team (a combination of 1st, 2nd and 3rd years) headed to Harlequins on Tuesday the 14th of March, to play Christ King Girls Secondary School. After a tough defeat to Cobh last week the girls were determined to get the result this time.
The Crosshaven girls came out all guns blazing at the beginning of the first half, dominating possession in the opposition’s half. Crosshaven put together some nice passing sequences through the centre of the pitch leading to shots on goal by many of the girls, but the Christ King goalkeeper held strong managing to keep the scoreboard at 0-0. After numerous efforts the Crosshaven girls were rewarded with a penalty corner but unfortunately could not capitalise on the opportunity. The Christ King defence worked well together to keep their team in the game.
Crosshaven girls began to show signs of fatigue giving the Christ King forwards more opportunities to score, but first year; Holly Feagan made some fantastic saves in the Crosshaven goal. To make matters worse Crosshaven’s rock in the midfield, Eimear Brady had to leave the pitch after a follow through strike from an opposing stick left her winded.
The Crosshaven girls showed great character, scoring the opening goal against the run of play. A strong cross from Niamh Scriven was deflected into the goal by Roisín Flannery. This concluded the first half. Despite the goal the girls came off the pitch at half time feeling deflated. A motivational team talk by Ms. Breen and Erica lifted spirits heading into the second half.
The girls came onto the pitch with a new mind set and this reflected in their play. An early goal by Niamh Scriven put Crosshaven 2-0 ahead in the opening minutes of the second half. The goal began with a seemingly innocuous ball from the defence but was picked up and carried into the circle by Niamh before she took her shot.
After returning to the field of play at the start of the second half Eimear Brady’s persistence in the centre of the field lead to her winning a short corner for the team. A strong injection from Sorcha Conway was gathered by Eimear. With no hesitation she slapped the ball; it flew past the keeper’s outstretched arm sitting nicely in the bottom right hand corner.
Crosshaven took their attention away from play after the goal, which led to a chance for Christ King which was again saved by Holly. The girls soon refocused winning their third penalty corner of the match. Once again Eimear took the shot which came up off a Christ King stick hitting Rachael Sisk on the side of the head. She was persuaded to come off the pitch and played no further part in the game.
The Crosshaven girls showed great mentality and didn’t let the scare phase them, returning to their attacking ways. This resulted in the final goal of the match; a shot on goal by Danni Claffey rebounded off the keeper landing on Roisín’s stick concluding in her second goal of the match.
On a warm day in harlequins the girls from Crosshaven put in a shift to be proud of winning 4-0 against Christ King. Good luck in the rest of the tournament girls!!
Hockey season off to good start
On the 16th Of November 2016, Crosshaven’s Senior Team started their season off well. They played Cobh and it was by no means an easy match. Crosshaven began strongly. At the beginning of the game Alice Brady passed an exceptional ball to Sarah Ahern who let it off to Fiona Pêche. Fiona took a shot but Cobh’s goalkeeper made a strong save. Out of nowhere Caoimhe Ronayne made a massive rebound and she got Crosshaven going with the first score. Cobh did not give up as they continued pushing and testing Crosshaven backs but Aisling O’Mahony and Phoebe Piper were not letting anyone pass. Crosshaven continued to work as a team and kept possession with excellent team play from Eimear Brady and Emily Russell. The first half ended with a score of 1-0 to Crosshaven but Cobh was not finished just yet. Cobh began the half very strong but Sorcha Conway made some exceptional saves in goal and no score was going in against her! The game continued with Alice Brady taking a tough hit to the chest but she ventured on and continued playing. Niamh Scriven , Andrea Long and Katie Bowen took some strong shots and were very unlucky not to get a score but Cobh were not giving up. Captain Casey Smith continued to encourage the players which kept all of Crosshaven going. The match ended with a final score of 1-0 and Crosshaven started their season off with a win.
