Transition Years take on Killarney to Kenmare hike

24th January 2012

Transition Year students braced the elements today, hiking from Killarney to Kenmare. Starting at Torc Waterfall, the group undertook the sharp incline towards Torc mountain before taking the old Kenmare road.

Conditions were foggy and wet underfoot with misty rain a constant feature. Nonetheless spirits were high and four hours later the group were never so happy to see their bus home.

Coláiste Muire students triumph at Young Scientist

Eleven students from TY and four from Second Year entered the BT Young Scientist 2012 last weekend. Their projects vary from developing artificial soil for arid countries and the perfect rugby place kick to the psychology behind “Where’s Wally” and do “red heads” feel more pain!

A big congratulations goes to Cait Cronin who received best in the Technology category.

Girls’ Basketball – Cadettes reach Cork final

Congratulations to the Cadette girls who represented Coláiste Muire in the Cork final on Tuesday.

The girls defied expectations by reaching the final after a string of victories earlier in the competition.

On the day, the girls met an excellent Christ-the-King side who proved too strong.

Great performances nonetheless by Michaela Egan, Jessica Dempsey and Emily Burke-O’Driscoll.

Crosshaven Calendar 2012 on sale now

The Crosshaven Calendar 2012 can be bought at Coláiste Muire over the coming weeks. The Calendar which depicts Crosshaven at its best can be purcahsed from Transition Year students who are selling and promoting the Calendar as part of a Mini Company project.

Coláiste Muire Student becomes Lions’ Club Ambassador

Transition Year student Patrick O’Donovan will represent the Carrigaline area district in the the Cork competition to become “Young Ambassador of the 21st Century”.

Patrick, along with students from other schools in the region, spoke to a panel of judges on their interests and hobbies. Particular attention was paid to Patrick’s involvement in his community.

The next round of interviews will take place in Cork on Friday to find the Cork representative. All entrants received a book voucher and Patrick was presented with a piece of cut glass.

Coláiste Muire advanced the semi finals of the under 19 “B” Cork. Championships in a closely contested affair in Coláiste Muire Sports’ hall.

The teams finished level after a very even four quarters of basketball before edging ahead in extra time and wining by the narrowest of margins.

Boys’ Basketball – Coláiste Muire lose two close encounters

In two admirable performaces, Coláiste Muire lost out to Coláiste Choilm Ballincollig in the under 16 and 19 league.

The under 16s did their best to stay with the Ballincollig side for most of the game before going down 38 to 23. Top scorer was Brian Crowley with 8 points.

The under 19s match was closer. Peter Jermyn kept the local side in it with a terrific display of shooting (16 points in total) but a very physical and well-drilled Ballincollig side manged to stay on top at the end.The game ended: Coláiste Choilm: 46, Coláiste Muire:37.

2nd Year Hockey Victory!

Congrats to the 2nd year hockey team that have won their 2nd match this season. The girls played St. Angela’s college and won 4-0!! Captain Sophie O’ Sullivan and vice-captains Katie O’ Brien (x2) & Vivienne Timbs scored. Well done girls!!

Coláiste Muire students impress at Public Speaking events

Transition Year students put in two excellent performances in a Public Speaking competition run by Cork Mental Health. The students were divided into two teams and spoke at two venues on Tuesday 14th November.

On Tuesday morning, Claudia McCarthy, Rosie O’Keeffe and Jessica Donohoe spoke on the topic “Your mental health is a gift, use it, don’t abuse it” and later that evening Padraig Donavan, Eoghan Ronayne and Seamus Allen spoke on the topic “Without vision there can be no hope”.

Both teams spoke very well on their respective topics for six minutes and received certificates for their efforts.
